Root canal (endodontic treatment) is performed to save a tooth that has
a damaged nerve and pulp. Infection, inflammation and irritation can occur
in the nerve due to facial trauma, deep decay, repeated treatment on a
tooth or a chip or crack in the tooth. Many times, a tooth will become
sensitive to hot or cold temperatures, ache when chewing or applying pressure.
The tooth may discolor (darken) and the affected area may become swollen
and tender.
