Sedation dentistry is a solution for those patients that are scared to death about going to the dentist!!!!!! The sedation technique uses medications to help you relax thru the dental appointment. There are several levels of sedation: 1. Minimal sedation which is when you are awake and relaxed 2. Moderate Sedation which is when you are awake but when you can speak but don’t remember the procedures 3. Deep sedation which is when you are on the edge of consciousness but can still be awakened 4. General Anesthesia which is when you are completely unconscious.
In our practice we use the following techniques:
1. Inhaled minimal sedation: We administer nitrous oxide ( laughing gas). The gas will relax you and you will be able to drive home afterwards.
2. Oral Sedation: This procedure is the one most used in our office. The sedation can range from minimal to moderate, depending on the amount of medication used. The pill we use is Halicon, which is similar to using Valium. Halicon will make you drowsy and you may fade in and out of sleepiness. If you do fall asleep, a gentle touch will wake you. This technique is the most popular sedation in general dentistry. We also use addtional medications if we need to sedate you more.
Regardless of which type of sedation you receive, we will administer a local anesthetic.
when should I consider sedation dentistry? 1.when you have a low pain tolerate 2. can’t keep still in the chair 3. sensitive teeth 4. bad gag reflex 5. large amount of dentistry to be done.
